Navigating US auctions without a strong technical vocabulary is difficult. On this page, we explain everything so you know what you're doing when you make your decision. Whether you're importing for the first time or you're an auction professional, this glossary of US auction terms will help you become an informed buyer.

AO - All in the vehicle: The vehicle is damaged in several places, such as the front and rear, sides and roof.

BC - Biological/chemical hazard: The interior of the car is contaminated with passengers' blood or chemicals.

BE - Engine compartment affected by fire: Fire damage to the engine compartment.

BI - Fire damaged interior: Fire damage to the interior of the car.

BN - Completely burnt vehicle: Extensive fire damage to most or all of the vehicle.

FD - Frame damage: Damage to the vehicle's frame or chassis.

FR - Forward infringement: Damage to the front of the vehicle.

HL - Krusa: Vehicle damaged by hail.

MC - Mechanical damage: Defects in the engine, electrical system, gearbox or other mechanical components.

MN - Minor dents/scratches: Minor dents or scratches not exceeding 30 mm.

NO - No visible damage: The vehicle may be fully intact or broken down with no visible damage.

NW - Normal wear and tear: Normal wear and tear on the vehicle without major damage.

PR - Incomplete repair: Visible signs of poor or incomplete repair.

RJ - Refused repair: The vehicle has been repaired, but the owner has abandoned the vehicle.

RO - Rollover: The vehicle was damaged in a rollover.

RR - Rear-end lesion: Damage to the rear of the vehicle.

SD - Lateral damage: Damage to either side of the vehicle.

ST - Robbed: Any parts removed or missing from the vehicle.

TP - Roof damage: Visible damage to the roof or doors.

UK - Unknown infringement: Unknown state of damage.

UN - Bottom lesion: Damage to the underside of the vehicle, possible damage to the chassis.

MS - Vandalism: Minor damage caused by vandalism.

WA - Water damage: Vehicle damaged by water or flood.

A - Actual mileage: Actual mileage.

E - Exempt from mileage marking: Old vehicles.

N - No exact mileage: Mileage is inaccurate or cannot be determined.

X - Exceeds mechanical limits: Older vehicles are no longer relevant and are not marked with mileage.

CL - Orderly documentation: Suitable for repair and registration.

SALVAGE TITLE - Damaged car documents: Suitable for repair and registration.

JUNK TITLE - Not repairable: Cannot be repaired or registered.

NO TITLE / PARTS ONLY - No documents: For parts only, not for repairs or registration.

NOT REPAIRABLE - Not repairable: Cannot be repaired or registered.

SCRAP CERTIFICATE OF TITLE - Scrap metal: Cannot be repaired or registered.

BILL OF SALE - Sale documents: Cannot be repaired or registered.

CERTIFICATE OF DESTRUCTION - Certificate of destruction: Cannot be repaired or registered.

WAIT CERTIFICATE - Waiting for document: Waiting for the relevant document to be issued.

RWD: Rear-wheel drive.

FWD: Front-wheel drive.

AWD: All-wheel drive.

ACV: Market price of a healthy vehicle.

Colour: Vehicle colour.

Damage Type: Type of infringement.

Description: Description with year of manufacture.

Expected Sale Date: Expected date of sale.

Facility: Sales pitch.

Type of loss: Type of loss.

Mileage: Mileage by miles.

Repair Cost: Repair cost (US/Canada).

TBD: Sale date to be announced.

Theft: Vehicle stolen.

Title State: State of registration.

Title Type: Type of technical passport.

VIN: Serial number of the vehicle bodywork.

Lot Number: Unique Copart vehicle identification number.

Primary Damage: Primary infringement.

Cylinders: Number of cylinders.

Body Style: Body type.

Engine Type: Engine type.

Drive: Driving wheels.

Vehicle Type: Type of vehicle.

FuelFuel type.

Keys: Does the auction have keys.

Highlights: Highlights of the vehicle.

Run & Drive: The car is up and running.

Buy It Now: Available immediately.

No License Required: Available without a business account.

Pure Sale Item: No minimum bet or reserve price.

Electric Vehicles: Electric cars.

Rentals: Cars owned by rental companies.

Copart GO: Copart auction app.

Engine start programme: Checking that the car starts.

Enhanced Vehicles: Improved vehicles.

Exotics: Exotic vehicles (e.g. Aston Martin, Jaguar).

New Items: Newly added cars for auction.

Featured Vehicles: Popular cars at auction.

Offsite Sales: Sales outlets outside the Copart site.

Recovered Thefts: Stolen vehicles recovered.

Fleet/Lease: Cars in the fleet or on lease.
